Charles B. Chang (Professor of Linguistics) is the director of the PAMLab. His research interests are in phonetics and phonology, language acquisition (especially L2 and L3/Ln learning), and the psycholinguistics of bilingualism and multilingualism.
Zhuangcheng Gao is a first-year PhD student in Linguistics at City University of Hong Kong. A graduate of Hunan Normal University and Wuhan University, he is broadly interested in phonetics and phonology, pragmatics, bilingualism, cognitive linguistics, and sociolinguistics. Currently, he is working on aspects of code-switching between Mandarin and English.
Tianqi Ju is a first-year PhD student in Language Science and Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, co-supervised by Profs. Yao Yao and Charles Chang. Her previous work looked at cross-linguistic influence in Chinese multilingual speakers, with a focus on both speech production and perception. Her research interests include phonetics, multilingualism, and language acquisition.
Meixian (Vicky) Li is a third-year PhD student in Language Science and Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University co-supervised by Profs. Yao Yao and Charles Chang. Her interests are in phonetics, sociolinguistics, and bilingualism. She is working on a Hong Kong GRF-funded project with Profs. Yao and Chang examining the social meanings of creaky voice in Mandarin Chinese.
Many (92 so far!) doctoral students, master’s students, undergraduate students, and interns have joined us over the years. They have moved on to academic positions at places such as Brown University and University of Nebraska; master’s and PhD programs at Brown, Cornell, LSE, MIT, NYU, Stanford, UCLA, UCL, UChicago, UDel, University of South Carolina, and Vanderbilt; and jobs in industry (e.g., Amazon, Duolingo), education, international affairs, law, marketing, medicine, and publishing.
Excellent people have collaborated with us over the years, from all over the world: Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, South Korea, Switzerland, the UK, and the US.
We have been able to welcome some external researchers as well.
